Blattman notes that the Chilean earthquake sped up the earth by a millionth of a second and wonders what would happen if everyone in China jumped. Tyler Cowen responds [same link]: nothing. All the population of the world is a trillionth as massive as the earth and it won't budge. The next comment suggested that if we all swam east, we could speed the earth up a touch.
WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT? I want longer days, not shorter ones!
So, everyone, please swim west. If we keep it up long enough, we can:
get rid of that extra leap year day.
get a little more time each day to sleep or do other things.
reduce "gravity" and convince your scale you've lost a hundredth of an ounce.
